What is the Book of Joshua?
Moses' successor Joshua leads the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land with a bloody military campgain. What happens in the Book of Joshua?
Joshua takes control from Moses, and scouts out the land a bit, before doing some miracles to finally enter the Promised Land. They make an altar and have passover, before beginning their invasion. Joshua leads the Israelites on a massive military campaign, gains a ton of land, and divides it among the Tribes of Israel. Joshua gives his final speech and dies.
1:1-3. God went to Joshua after Moses died.
God said, "It's time for what you've been preparing for. You get your people ready to cross the Jordan River, and go to the land I brought you out of Egypt to have.
1:4. Your territory will be great.
1:5. No one will be able to defeat you in battle, I'll be with you like I was with Moses.
1:6-8. Be strong and lead your people. Obey the Law given to Moses, and you'll be successful.
1:9. I've said all this before."
1:10-11. Joshua gave the orders to get ready and move out in three days.
1:12-15. He reminded the Tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh of their deal to help in the wars, even though they got to settle their land.
1:16-18. They agreed they would Joshua just like they did Moses- to the death.
2:1.
2:2. Someone told the King of Jericho.
2:3. Jericho ordered Rahab to bring out the spies.
2:4-5. Rahab lied and said, "Yes, there were people here, but I didn't know they were spies. Either way, I don't know where they went, but they only left a little while ago, you might still be able to catch them."
2:6. She actually had them hidden on the roof.
2:7. The guard sent out looking for the spies, and soon, the city gate was shut.
2:8-10. When the spies were laying down to go to bed, Rahab came up to them and said, "We heard rumors of the things God has done for you.
2:11. People are jealous and fearful, because they know God is with you.
2:12-13. So, please, promise me that God will take it easy on me and my family, because of the kindness I've shown you."
2:14. "Of course," the spies said, "You saved our lives- we'll save yours."
2:15. She lowered a rope out her window, and over the city wall.
2:16. She told them to go hide in the woods for three days until the guard stops looking, then they'll be safe to go back home.
2:17-19. The spies said, "The only way you'll be safe when we come destroy the city is if you tie a red string in your window, and everyone stays inside the house. That's how we'll know.
2:20. And if you decide to turn us in, the deal is off."
2:21. "Deal," she said, and tied a red string in her window.
2:22. They climbed out the window and hid in the forest for three days until the guards stopped searching the road.
2:23. They headed back and told Joshua what happened.
2:24. They said, "God has already given the whole land to us- they're terried of us."
3:1. Early in the morning, they left and camped on the side of the river before crossing.
3:2-4. After three days, the officers gave the command to always follow the Box of Promises and the priests who carry it, but to always stay about half mile away.
3:5. Joshua told the people to clean themselves and get ready for the next day.
3:6. Joshua told the priests to take the Box of Promises and march ahead. They did.
3:7. God told Joshua, "Today I will make it clear to everyone I am with you as I was with Moses.
3:8-17. Tell the priests to stand in the river with the Box of Promises. Even though the river is flooding, it will damned and stopped up, so that the army may pass by on dry land."
That exact thing happened.
4:1-7. When they finished crossing, God told Joshua to pick 12 people to go choose rocks from the bottom of the Jordan to take with them as a reminder of this event forever.
4:8-9. They grabbed them, and Joshua set them up, and they're still standing today.
4:10-11. As soon as all this was done and everybody was safely across, the priests came through to the other side.
4:15-18. When the priests came up from the river, the water started flowing again.
4:12-13. Everyone crossed, about 40,000 in total, ready to face Jericho in war.
4:14. That was the day God showed support of Joshua, and Israel treated Joshua as well as they had treated Moses.
4:19-24. They camped at Gilgal, which was on the border of Jericho. This was where they set up the stones they took from the river as a reminder of crossing the Jordan River, just like Moses crossed the Red Sea.
5:1. All the nearby kings heard about how God stopped the Jordan River, and lost the courage to face them in war.
5:2-7. At that time, God told Joshua to make flint knives, and make sure everyone was circumcised, because they had stopped doing this to children born while they wandering through the desert for the 40 years.
They did- everyone was circumcised.
5:8. They remained at camp here until they were healed.
5:9. God took away the last bit of Egypt from the Israelites on this day.
5:10.
5:11. They ate flat bread the next day.
5:12. The manna they had been recieving stopped coming from the sky once they ate the food from this side of the land.
5:13. One day, Joshua looked up and saw a person standing with a sword drawn. Joshua asked, "Are you on our team, or our enemies?"
5:14. "Neither," they said, "I am the leader of heaven's army."
Joshua fell in wosrhip, and said, "What message does God have today?"
5:15. The angel said, "Take off your shoes. You are standing in a holy place." Joshua did.
6:1. By this point, the gate to Jericho had been shut tight due the Israelites. No one was allowed to enter or leave.
6:2. God told Joshua, "See- all wrapped up like a present.
6:3. March once around the city, every day for six days.
6:4. Have 7 priests lead the Box of Promises, carrying horns. On the 7th day, march around the city seven times, while blowing the trumpets.
6:5. When you hear the long blast, everyone should start screaming, and their wall will fall down, and everyone can rush in.
6:6-7. Joshua commanded them to march, with 7 priests ahead of the Box of Promises, with everyone else behind.
6:8-9. They started marching and blowing their trumpets.
6:10. Joshua told the army to be quiet until the signal was given, then to start yelling.
6:11. They circled the city once, and returned to camp.
6:12-14. The did the same the next day, for six days straight.
6:15. On the 7th day, they circled the city 7 times.
6:16-19. Joshua gave the signal. He ordered everyone killed except Rahab the prostitute and her family, and to steal all the metal for it to go to the treasury.
6:20-21. The trumpets sounded, people started screaming, and the wall fell. They conquered the city and destroyed every breathing thing.
6:22-23. Except Rahab, her and her family were brought to safety.
6:24. They burned the whole city and stole all the metal.
6:25. Except Rahab.
6:26. Joshua cursed anyone who would try to rebuild the city.
6:27. Everyone around heard about it.
7:1. But one of the Israelites didn't follow the rules. Someone named Achan stole an idol, and God was pissed.
7:2. Joshua sent out spies to another city called Ai.
7:3. They reported back that it was a small city, and they didn't even need to send the whole army.
7:4-5. They sent about 3,000 soldiers, but they were defeated by Ai and driven back.
7:6. Joshua ripped his shirt and fell in prayer. The elders did the same, and sprinkled dirt on their heads.
7:7-9. Joshua said to God, "Did you just bring us out here to lose? We could have stayed on the other side of the river! What can I do if we're just going to be defeated? Everyone will now know we are weak, and come destroy us!"
7:10-11. God said, "What are you doing on the ground? Stand up! Someone has broken the rules and kept something they shouldn't have.
7:12. This is why you lost. Find out who it was, and I will go back to aiding you.
7:13-14. Tomorrow, tell the people they need to get clean. I will narrow down who it is- by tribe, clan, family, and down to the person.
7:15. Then you'll kill them.
7:16-18. The next day, Joshua narrowed it down to Achan, son of Carmi, from the tribe of Judah.
7:19. Joshua told Achan, "Be honest- what did you do?"
7:20-21. Achan replied, "All right fine! I saw a beautiful robe, along with silver and gold, and stole it all! They're hidden, buried by my tent."
7:22. Joshua sent messengers to look for the items, and they found it.
7:23. They took the items, and spread them out before God.
7:24-26. Joshua took Achon, all his items, and all his kids out to a valley, killed them, and heaped up a pile a stones on top of their dead bodies.
8:1. God told Joshua, "Alright, you're good now, try again, don't be afraid.
8:2. Do the same thing you did to Jericho, except steal the animals this time."
8:3-4. Joshua chose and army of 30,000 to go attack the city and ambush it at night.
8:5-7. He said, "A group of you will advance, then retreat quickly. The opposing army will chase after us retreating like before, and the rest of the army hiding in the forest will go in and attack the city.
8:8. When you have taken the city, burn it all to the ground."
8:9. Joshua sent them off to get in position, but stayed behind with the rest of the people.
8:10-12. Early the next the day, Joshua got up and marched with 5,000 soldiers towards Ai, and set up camp just north of the city.
8:13. There were other soliders in position to the west.
That night, Joshua advanced into the valley betwen them and the city.
8:14. The king of Ai saw this, and sent out their army.
8:15. Joshua and his army let themselves be driven back, and ran towards the desert.
8:16. The soldiers of Ai chased them, and were led away from the city.
8:17. Not a single soldier remained in Ai- they all went after Joshua.
8:18. God told Joshua to point his spear at the city. He did.
8:19. When he did, the men ready for ambush rushed from their position and capture the city.
8:20-21. The soliders of Ai looked back and saw smoke, but by this point, the Israelites had reengaged them in battle.
8:22. The soliders from the ambush came from the city and surrounded the Ai soliders in open battle. The Israelites killed them all.
8:23. They took the king alive, and brought him to Joshua.
8:24. When they finished killing everyone in the field, they returned to the city to kill all the women and children.
8:25. They murdered 12,000 people that day.
8:26. Joshua had his spear pointed at the city the whole time.
8:27. They carried off the animals as instructed.
8:28. They burnt the whole city, and it's still a pile of bricks to this day.
8:29. They hanged the king in a tree. At sunset, they took his body down and threw it in front of the city gate, and threw stones over it, which are still there to this day.
8:30-32. Then, Joshua built the monument on Mount Ebal, as instructed by Moses, with the law written on them.
8:33. Half stood on Mount Ebal, and half on Mount Gerizim, as Moses had directed them to.
8:34-35. Joshua read the whole book- both blessings and curses. Everyone heard every word.
9:1-2. A bunch of kings heard about all this going on, and created an alliance to defeat Israel.
9:3-5. When the people of Gibeon heard, they decided to try to trick Joshua. They sent representatives who brought moldy food and dressed in old, worn out clothes and gear, and went to talk to Joshua and the elders.
9:6. They said, "We are from a far away country and want to make a peace treaty."
9:7. The elders said, "How do we know? You might be in one of the close territories."
9:8. They said, "We are your servants."
Joshua said, "What do you really want? Where are you really from?"
9:9-11. They said, "We come from a far away land, and we came because we heard what God has done for you. Our own elders sent us to make peace with you.
9:12-13. See- look at this moldy food- it was fresh when we left. That's how far we traveled.
See how worn out our gear is? It was new when we left."
9:14. No one thought to ask God if they were lying.
9:15. Joshua made a peace treaty with them.
9:16. Three days later, Israel found out they were Gibeonites who were a neighboring country.
9:17-20. The Israelites set out, and got to their cities, but didn't attack them because of the peace treaty. They wanted to, but the Israelite leaders wouldn't let them because they didn't want to break their word.
9:21. They decided to use them as slave labor instead.
9:22-23. Joshua called them to him and asked why they lied, and cursed them.
9:24-25. They said they lied because they were scared, but it was up to Joshua to do whatever he wanted.
9:26-27. Joshua decided not to kill them, and to force them to cut wood and carry water forever.
10:1. The King of Jerusalem, Adoni-Zedek, heard about the wars of Israel, and how the Gibeonites had made a treaty with them.
10:2. This scared the king, because Gibeon was a large, powerful city.
10:3-5. So the king formed an alliance with 5 other nearby kings, and they all went and attacked Gibeon.
10:6. The Gibeonites went and asked Joshua for help.
10:7. Joshua marched straight to Gilgal with the entire army.
10:8. God gave Joshua moral support.
10:9-10. Aftermarching all night, they showed up and suprised the invading armies, and defeated them. They turned around and ran up the road.
10:11. As they rain away, God sent giant hailstorms to kill even more than were killed in battle.
10:12-13. On that day, Joshua prayed the sun and moon would stand still, and they did for a full day, like it says in the Book of Jasher.
10:14. There was never a time before or after God did something at the request of a human. It was a huge sign!
10:15. Joshua went back to camp.
10:16-18. Meanwhile, the 5 kings themselves had escaped and hidden in cave. Joshua found out, and sent out people to trap them in.
10:19-21. They also continued on and killed most of the remaining survivors before they got back home.
10:22-23. Then Joshua called for the kings to be brought to him.
10:24-25. He had his army commanders step on their throats, and said, "This is what we will do to all our enemies."
10:26-27. Joshua killed them and hung them in a tree until the sun went down, then buried them under piles of rocks.
10:28-43. Joshua continued on the military campaign, and destroyed a whole bunch of cities.
11:1-22. Another alliance of kings tried to come together with a huge army, but they didn't stand a chance. They were all completely destroyed.
11:23. Joshua conquered the entire land, just as God had told Moses. There was a break from war.
12:1-24. They defeated 31 kings in total, and acquired a ton of land.
13:1-7. But, even though Joshua was old by this point, God told him there was more conquering to do, so take that land into account when dividing it among all the tribes.
13:8-33. Moses had already given land to the Tribe of Reuben, the Tribe of Gad, and half of the Tribe of Manasseh.
Moses gave no land to the Levites, because they were the priests and got other privileges.
14:1-2. Eleazar and Joshua set up the rest of the land according to rolling dice, just as Moses said to.
14:3-5. Moses had already gave some people their land, and the Tribe of Joseph had split into the Tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim.
14:6-15. First, Caleb asked for the land Moses promised him, and Joshua gave it to him.
15:1-63. Next, Judah got some land in the south.
16:1-10. The Tribe of Ephraim got land in the north.
17:1-13. The Tribe of Manasseh got land in the north, too.
17:14-18. The people of these tribes were upset they split one share of land between the two of them, so Joshua pointed out more lands they could conquer if they wanted to expand.
18:1-10. Joshua had the other 7 tribes go examine the remaining land first and then split it up.
18:11-28. The Tribe of Benjamin got some land between Judah and Joseph.
19:1-9. The Tribe of Simeon got some land in Judah.
19:10-16. The Tribe of Zebulun got some land.
19:17-23. The Tribe of Issachar got some land.
19:24-31. The Tribe of Asher got some land.
19:32-39. The Tribe of Naphtali got some land.
19:40-48. The Tribe of Dan got some land.
19:49-50. When they finished dividing the land, even Joshua got some. He built a town.
19:51. This was how Eleazar and Joshua split up the land according to God.
20:1-9. Then they made the asylum cities where people can go while awaiting trial; as was instructed to Moses.
21:1-42. And even the Levite priests did end up getting some land and cities to stay in.
21:43-44. That's how God split up and gave the land that was promised.
21:45. God fulfilled all the promises made.
22:1-9. Joshua blessed the Tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, gave them their share of treasure from war, and sent them back home.
22:10. On their way home, they built a huge, unauthorized altar on the other side of the Jordan River.
22:11-12. When the other Israelites saw, they gathered to go to war with them.
22:13-14. The Israelites sent Phinehas, son of Eleazar, along with a representative from each of the 10 tribes, to talk to the other 2 1/2 tribes.
22:15-18. They got to Gilead, to the other tribes, they said, "What the hell have you done? This is going to piss off God, and God is going to take it out on all of us!"
22:19. If your land isn't good enough, you can come share ours with us, but you can't just go building altars where you want without God's permission!
22:20. Do you remember when Achan stole an idol and we lost the war? He wasn't the only one who died for his mistake.
22:21-23. The other tribes said, "God knows the truth! If we built this in disobendience to God, let God kill us now. If we used it to turn away from God, let God come and charge us directly.
22:24-29. But we didn't do it to turn away from God and do unauthorized sacrifices.
We did it to be able to show our children, so our children can know for sure they are a part of God's inheritance, and we officially have one thing in the promised land, on the other side of the Jordan River.
We built it specifically to be proof and a sign to both our descendents that we are a part of God's inheritance, too. Neither side will be able to deny our history.
There is no way in hell we would break the rules- we know where to do sacrifices."
22:30-31. Phinehas and other leaders were pleased with this explanation, and said, "Now we know you acted faithfully to God."
22:32. They all returned and reported back what was going on.
22:33. The rest of the Israelites were happy, and no one wanted to go to war anymore.
22:34. They named the altar: "The Proof that God is God."
23:1-2. A long time passed, everything was peaceful, and Joshua grew old. He gathered together all the leaders and judges and said, "I'm pretty old by now.
23:3. You've see lots of shit with your own eyes.
23:4-5. Remember all the lands we conquered, and go conquer whatever is left. God will be with you and help drive them out.
23:6. Be strong, and obey everything written in the Law of Moses.
23:7. Do not be influence by evil nations. Do not worship their gods.
23:8. Hold strong to God.
23:9-10. With God, no one will be able to beat you. One of you will be able to take on a thousand soldiers.
23:11. So, love God.
23:12-13. If you don't, if you ally yourselves with the survivors, you'll lose all this land and all your peace, and become slaves.
23:14. It's about time for me to die. You know that God has fulfilled all promises made.
23:15. But don't let you think this means the curse doesn't still apply.
23:16. If you make God angry, God will destroy you and remove you from the land."
24:1-2. Joshua continued,
"God says,
'Many years ago, your ancestors, Terah, the father of Abraham, lived on the other side of the River, and worshipped other Gods.
24:3. But I took Abraham across the river, and gave him many descendents.
Abraham had Isaac,
24:4. and Isaac had Jacob and Esau.
Esau got the country of Seir, but Jacob went down to Egypt.
24:5. Then, I brought you out of Egypt with Moses and Aaron.
24:6-7. When I brought your parents out, the Egyptian chasesd you into the Red Sea, and I drowned them all.
Then you lived in the desert for a long time.
24:8. Then I took you to the Amorites, and you took their land.
24:9. Balak, the King of Moab, tried to curse you by hiring Balaam.
24:10. But I didn't listen to Balaam, and had him bless you instead.
24:11. Then you crossed the Jordan and conquered Jericho, and many other nations.
24:12. I went ahead of you to weaken them. You did not do it on your own.
24:13. I gave you farmland which you didn't develop, cities which you didn't build, and trees which you didn't plant.'"
24:14. Joshua continued, "Respect and serve God- throw away any other gods!
24:15. Make your choice. Choose whatever god you want- but I'm choosing God."
24:16-18. The people said, "Us too!"
24:19-20. Joshua said, "Are you sure? I really feel like you're going to mess it up."
24:21. The crowd said, "We're sure! We are going to worship God."
24:22. Joshua said, "Do you promise?"
The crowd said, "Yes! We do!"
24:23. Joshua said, "Get rid of any other gods, and dedicate your heart to God!"
24:24. The crowd cheered.
24:25. Joshua wrote up a paper for them sign.
24:26. He wrote all this extra stuff in the Book of the Law. He took a large stone and set it under a tree.
24:27. He said, "This stone is our witness- it heard everything we said, and will tell on you if you break any rules."
24:28. Joshua sent everyone away.
24:29. Joshua died at the age of 110.
24:30. They buried him on his property in the nation of Ephraim.
24:31. The people served God all throughout Joshua's lifetime, and even through the lifetime of the elders who outlived him and saw all the same shit.
24:32. Joseph's bones, which had been with them the whole time since leaving Egypt, were finally buried at the place Jacob had bought back in the day.
24:33. Eleazar also died, and was buried on his son's Phinehas' property.
